"Kings who are feared, who seek power to rule and conquer are those who rise and fall with time. But the king who is decisive, who loves, who is wise is the one who will always be remembered as a true king."

I thought of this on my way home from culture shock tonight, on the way to robex with the crew. We asked Andre and Austin what they thought what their definition of a king was, their answer was dictionary and Joseph interjected with what his definition was "A king is someone who is feared, who masters, like, everything - like - every style and yeah..." though Joseph has close to no lingustic skills; he made his point. He said afterwards that Julz, Joseph, and Anthony stayed with Paulskee when they went to pheonix. They talked for hours and he, paulskee, shared his aspirations, insight, and hope for the Cypher City Kings. Thats what he said to be a king, one who conquers. Though i do have much respect for paulskee, like i do for all people, i must disagree with him. To my beleife, a king is not one who conquers or who is feared he is one who is loved, by people, one who is wise, beyond common knowledge, one who rules by not ruling at all but letting the energy of life flow as it always has been. I can see where Paulskee has gotten his belief in a king. Those who have been named kings in history, but i beleive that the word king has become nothing more than a title and has lost its truest and deepest meaning.
So now with that said, i can see why people have been conversing of my crews name: Cypher City Kings. Cypher City meaning The city, whos essence is not in competition and whos heart is not in money, but in the cypher where friends are made, bonds are reinforced and the ego is lost and the mind is clear - San Diego. And Kings. Thats what it means to me what a king is, a Cypher City King. Nothing more, nothing less.

wow..i hope that wasnt the only impression cc got from coolin haha. truth be told, i was a person that aspired to reach that "status" of KING with my work growing up in HipHop / breakin for the last 15+ yrs of my life: "Kings who are feared, who seek power to rule and conquer are those who rise and fall with time."

Granted, i acheived a lot of the above (imo) in my time w/ the accomplishments of my former crew jams etc., but more importantly was the "fall" essence in that sentence, which hit home hard when i did fall. In turn teaching me that karmic lesson that I had to go through in order to find myself today.

"But the king who is decisive, who loves, who is wise is the one who will always be remembered as a true king."

peeps to this day run up on me and even try to say "peace king" and i stop them on the dot and say yo, i aint no king, im no diff from you. ive never tagged the word: king to my name or former crew name, because like ive told cc, a king within HipHop isnt self proclaimed, its earned. huge word especially in HipHop culture to claim King status -but thats just a side of me looking out for CC as the younger generation. (watch stylewars and you'll catch my drift)

I believe its a pretty egotistical route to call yourself a king at such a young age with only so many years in the game (i'll always stand by this) but to each his/her own.

doesnt mean that i dont got love for CC just my stance on it.

no, actually to tell you the truth the crew got gitty, like little girls, talking about you. It was funny, really, and refreshing to see their eyes and hearts inspired. Not only that, but they all have very poor skills for saying anything, even Hi. Especially Joseph, he mean muggs everyone on a happy day. HAHAHA

You are honered and revered, paulskee, by many - including me. And i do agree with you, it is quite egotistical and, furthermore, disrespectful to apply the word "king" to our name. And, though I'm not making an excuse or justification, it is in my greatest honor to say that i get to be in a crew with people who i, as a bboy, have been raised with. They are my brothers - no matter where i am, and it is my pleasure and duty to be with them whether i agree with them or not. I have the most deep love for them and i have faith that they all come to their own truths, not only about our name, but about life.

My friend, thank you for your insight. it's been a real pleasure reading the little you have said. Our views aren't so different at all. Style Wars is a great movie, have you seen the movie Kikujiro No Natsu? Such a great movie, i'm sure you'll enjoy it. It has nothing to do with dancing,it's random that i brought it up, but you did suggest a great m,ovie to me so i like to return the favor. but it's a great movie non-the-less. It's Iapanese, hope you like subtitles. haha

Hope you and you're family are well, Happy Holidays.

If you're talking about Hip Hop, then "king" is used to refer to someone that is generally thought of as the person that is at the top of the chain in their field. Being a king in Hip Hop means that everyone else needs to be below you. People can argue over what "king" means, in general, but Hip Hop has it's own usage; therefore, that's the usage you should go by if you're going to use "king" in a Hip Hop context.

From the get-go, Cypher City Kings was an arrogant name to call yourself, because it was your own self-proclamation, not the people, that named you. What made it hard to take serious was that it was a bunch of kids who were calling themselves the best––because the kings, in Hip Hop culture, are the best. For example, you weren't the king of a train line unless you dominated it more than anyone else.

Having said that, it's a common occurrence in Hip Hop for people to call themselves kings. It's been happening for decades. Like love (in general), it's a highly abused word in the culture. Calling yourself a king just sounds cool. Shit, RunDMC called themselves the Kings of Rock. I'm sure there's some bands out there that would beg to differ. But this is why it doesn't mean anything anymore to be called a king. The word has been watered-down to the point where it holds no more value.

So, what's a king?

Doesn't even matter anymore?

Word. You could read my take on it on my blog. You have to remember that the terms used in Hip-hop are used in a MUCH different context. Kings in the english dictionary are used to govern, KINGS in hip-hop slang are referred to as UNTOUCHABLE. I'm just touching base on the subject.

I agree that it was arrogant to self-proclaim ourselves as KINGS to begin with, we are still kids. Though it would make ourselves look even less if we were to change our name at this point after repping our asses off in the cyphers.

On a broader note, Cypher City refers to the San Diego b-boy scene. So in a sense, Cypher City Kings would originate from San Diego Kings, which we understand is the crew name for a famous graffiti crew.
